Dr. Thomas received awards for his books, Life For Us Is What We Make It and Understanding Interracial Unity.  In the later he coined the term “the other tradition” to describe America’s uncelebrated and overlooked history of close cross racial collaboration to advance lasting change for access and equity. He recently co-authored The State of Black Michigan, 1967-2007 that investigates how Michigan's black population has changed, how its interactions with the white community have altered, and how policymakers can narrow the "equality gap" that continues to persist.
