Our Story
Riders for Race Amity is a grassroots youth cycling initiative that grew out of a nucleus of race amity workers in Madison, Wisconsin. Through cycling, dialogue, and service, participants build friendships across differences and engage communities along the way. NCRA serves as the initiative’s fiscal agent.
In 2025, cyclists journeyed from Madison, Wisconsin to Montgomery, Alabama, visiting historical civil rights sites and engaging in meaningful community conversations along the way. Through restorative justice circles, public discourse gatherings, and service projects, participants build bridges across racial divides and inspire lasting change.
What started as a small group of adults grew into something transformative when youth organically joined and rose into leadership. It has become an annual two-week trek in the latter half of June. Their courage and clarity turned this project into a movement—and reminded us that the next generation is not waiting to build a better world.

The Journey
Riders build friendships through cycling, community conversations, service, and visits to historic civil rights sites.
Preparation, support, and reflection
Before the journey, riders prepare through orientation and training in group riding, safety, route awareness, teamwork, and dialogue. On the road, a daily rhythm of ride briefings, supported cycling, rest, and guided reflection connects the physical journey with learning and community engagement. Adult mentors and a support crew help with safety and logistics throughout.
The approach emphasizes consistency over speed, reflection over competition, and belonging over performance. The aim is to help young people become confident, community-oriented riders who can carry cycling, friendship, and service into everyday life.

Youth Empowerment
We believe in these youth until they believe in themselves.
Too often, society views young people through a lens of deficiency—as inexperienced, disengaged, or in need of correction. At Riders for Race Amity, we see young people not as a problem to fix, but as leaders in the making.
Youth are trusted with real responsibility, supported by caring adults, and encouraged to use their voice. Through dialogue, service, and shared experience, they discover their strength and their power to create change.

Conversations that move us toward unity, friendship, and justice.
A Race Amity Roundtable is a structured, youth- and adult-facilitated conversation that brings people together to share stories, listen deeply, and build empathy across lines of difference. These gatherings invite participants to reflect on race and belonging.
