ABOUT THE SHOW

Sing Sistah Sing! Tales of Transatlantic Freedom is a work conceived, written and performed by internationally celebrated Mezzo Soprano Andrea Baker in collaboration with renowned composer Howard Moody, and directed by John Paul McGroarty.

The show celebrates African diasporic narratives from our living musical cultures of folk, blues, jazz, psalm singing and opera, as well as the music of Robert Burns. Andrea performs an incredible range of rare and beautiful songs from across centuries and oceans, connecting and exploring awe-inspiring musical traditions, story and song.

This musical journey had its world premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Scotland, in August 2022. With the support of the Made In Scotland Onward Touring fund, it now comes to Boston in February 2023 for its American Premiere and Showcase.

The Edinburgh Music Review had this to say about the debut of Tales of Transatlantic Freedom at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2022:

Andrea Baker can sing! From Gaelic psalm, holler, field song and blues, to, gospel and jazz, this poetic, operettic mezzo soprano, was born to entertain…

Transitioning to her sweet operatic tones, Baker’s vocal rendition of Gershwin’s ‘Dr Jesus’ was magnificent. Her ability to vocally maneuver from one musical genre to another is quite remarkable.  Read full review here.
